Friends and family say they are "devastated and numb" after the tragic death of a mum who drowned after swimming with her daughter at an unpatrolled beach.

Police said Natasha Thorpe from Toowoomba was swimming with her 11-year-old daughter at First Bay near Coolum yesterday morning when they were dragged out to sea.

Ms Thorpe's daughter made it back to shore but the 34-year-old nursery worker was found a short time later floating in the water.

Despite the best efforts of surfers and off-duty lifeguards to perform CPR until paramedics arrived, Ms Thorpe was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends and family have taken to social media to remember the Toowoomba woman.

"Devastated and numb to be losing you on earth but heaven has gained one very funny, quick-witted and cheeky angel," one said.

"A photo, a memory, a feeling, a moment in time. An image that in the same motion brings joy and sadness," another wrote.
