A train carrying sulphuric acid has derailed in northwest Queensland.

A Queensland Rail spokeswoman said no one was injured when the Aurizon freight train derailed 15km east of Julia Creek early Saturday morning.

She said four wagons had derailed but all 39 were upright and no spillage had been detected.

Crews were assessing the site, while safety investigators were en route, she said.

"Safety is Queensland Rail's number one priority and we are investigating the cause of the incident and will work closely with relevant authorities," the spokeswoman said.

"The line is currently closed and the extent of damage to the track is yet to be determined."
