Thurston encourages Aurukun kids

Queensland State of Origin great Johnathan Thurston has sent the troubled students of Aurukun a message of support, urging them to keep turning up to school.

Minutes after helping Queensland to a 6-4 win over NSW in the opening match of the Origin series on Wednesday, Thurston finished his on-field interview with an encouraging word for the children of the Cape York indigenous community.

"I just want to say a quick hello to Aurukun state school," he told the Nine Network.

"There's obviously been a lot of trouble up there. To all the students up there, I just want to say `believe in yourselves and keep turning up to school'."

The Aurukun school was closed last week for the second time in a fortnight following major unrest in the township.

The school's principal was carjacked twice and threatened with an axe, while around 25 teachers were evacuated after children as young as six allegedly threw rocks at security guards and attempted to break into a car near the teachers' accommodation.

The school, which has 300-odd students, will remain closed until at least the start of term 3.

Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has ordered a review into the school.
