Three charged over Qld police assault

Three men have been charged with assaulting a police officer after an incident in far north Queensland which left a policeman unconscious and needing scans.

Cairns police allege the 28-year-old male constable approached a group of men following a disturbance at a licensed premises in Cairns on Tuesday when he was surrounded and assaulted, and fell to the ground.

It's alleged the men continued to assault the officer, knocking him unconscious, before his partner used OC spray and they ran off, with police arresting the trio a short time later.

The injured constable was taken to Cairns Base Hospital with multiple abrasions in a stable condition and will undergo further scans on Wednesday.

Three men, aged 20, 21 and 22, have been charged with serious assault of a police officer and other offences and are due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
