Flight delays, cancellations in Qld fog

Flights in and out of Brisbane Airport have been extensively delayed, and some cancelled, due to thick fog blanketing the city.

While the fog is beginning to lift, the weather conditions have wreaked havoc with flight schedules.

"Visibility is improving for the moment, we hope that will continue to be the case," a Brisbane Airport spokeswoman told AAP.

"There will be delays and possible cancellations, so passengers need to check on our website or with their airline."

Poor visibility forced the airport to stop planes from taking off and landing at various times on Thursday morning.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Sean Fitzgerald said the fog had been widespread, with patches along the coast all the way to Townsville, and expected visibility to vastly improve after 9.30am (AEST).

The low visibility also stopped ferry services and caused traffic chaos in Brisbane.

Some City Cat services had resumed, but there were delays of up to 20 minutes, Translink spokesman Richard French said.
