Our recent burst of rain has been great for gardens but it's also meant a huge surge in weeds.

Just in time, Canstar Blue has released its annual weed killer ratings.

Beating the big names this year is Aldi's Gardenline product, with five stars for overall customer satisfaction.

Receiving five stars for effectiveness was Roundup, while Yates was awarded five stars for ease of use.

Canstar Blue’s Harrison Astbury said over 60 percent of those surveyed did try other brands before they settled.

Mr Astbury said the indecision of customers was  a product of people not getting the results they’re after.

“Above all gardeners want effectiveness so there's no use spending $20, $30 on a weed killer, if it's not going to kill the weeds.

“People are willing to spend a bit more to get an effective brand.”

Canstar’s research also suggests consumers are not reading the weed killer labels.

“It is really important consumers follow the label before they actually apply the weed killer,” Mr Astbury said.

“(But) a quarter of respondents said they just rip open the packet and just wing it when they go to apply the weed killer which is a bit of a concern because it is toxic to humans and animals.”

The gardeners surveyed also gave Aldi top spot for the “smell” of its weed killers.
