OCTOBER 2015:

- NSW Police finance department worker Curtis Cheng is shot dead by 15-year-old boy of Kurdish-Iraqi background who was born in Iran in a terror-linked attack in Sydney.

- A British teenager is sentenced to life with at least five years detention for plotting massacre in Australia on Anzac Day. The 15-year-old was found to have helped plan beheading of police officers in name of IS.

DECEMBER 2014:

- Man Haron Monis holds 18 captives for 16 hours in Sydney's Lindt cafe. He and two captives are killed in a shoot-out.

SEPTEMBER 2014:

- Intercepted call from IS recruiter sparks counter-terrorism raids in Sydney and Brisbane. Omarjan Azari is arrested in Sydney and later charged with terror-related offence. Omar Succarieh, 31, is also later charged with terror-related offences. Both cases remain before the court.

- Abdul Numan Haider is shot dead after knifing officers outside Melbourne police station. Police held concerns about the teen for months before the incident. He had been seen at a shopping centre with an IS flag.
