Two teens have been charged after their joyride in a stolen ute ended up with them smashing through a fence into heavy machinery and becoming bogged on roadworks.

Police said a police helicopter spotted the pair hooning through Logan, driving down the wrong side of the road and through red lights at high speed after stealing the purple ute from Park Ridge on Monday afternoon.

They were tracked from the air until they lost control near the roadworks.

"The vehicle became stuck in the soft road base, police approached and police took the 15-year-old male driver and an 18-year-old male passenger into custody," police said.

The 15-year-old has been charged with offences including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, burglary and possession of dangerous drugs, while the older teen was charged with four counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, burglary and possession of utensils.

The 18-year-old is due to front Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
