An emergency situation has been declared on the Bruce Highway after a petrol tanker rolled and spilled 20,000 litres of fuel near the Queensland town of Childers.

Emergency crews and a salvage team tasked with cleaning up the spill remain at the scene after Monday night's crash.

Police have established an 800-metre exclusion zone in all directions around the crash site, and two lanes of the highway remain closed with diversions in place.
