Taiwanese man committed over meth haul

A Taiwanese man will face a sentencing hearing for attempting to import $20 million worth of crystal meth hidden in household electrical appliances into Australia.

Chia-Cheng Ku, 27, was arrested last November in Brisbane after Australian Federal Police intercepted an air freight package containing 20.6kg of methamphetamine.

The package had allegedly arrived via Hong Kong and had an estimated street value of $20.6 million.

Ku, who has not entered a formal plea, was committed on Friday to the Brisbane Supreme Court on one charge of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.

He will face a sentencing hearing at a later date and remains in custody.

Meanwhile, a second Taiwanese man arrested over the same meth haul has had the charge against him dropped after spending seven months on remand.

Chun-Hao Kuo, 31, was charged alongside Ku with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug but prosecutors withdrew the offence last Friday due to a lack of evidence.
