Storms, extreme heat and dangerous surf is expected in Queensland ahead of Australia Day.

The weather bureau warns severe thunderstorms could bring damaging winds, heavy rain and flash flooding to a large area of the Sunshine State from Saturday until late next week.

Forecaster Jess Carey told AAP there's a chance the storms could hit between Toowoomba and Charleville and south to St George on Saturday, before moving to other inland areas further north over the next five days.

It is expected to be warm and stormy on Saturday across most of the southeast, including Brisbane, with temperatures set to reach the mid-30s.

A southerly change will bring cooler conditions and possibly showers across the region from Sunday to Tuesday ahead of a high of 29C, and a chance of rain is forecast for Brisbane on Australia Day.
