Stolen items returned to Cairns residents

It appears some thieves have developed a conscience following a break-in at a Cairns house.

Jewellery, wine and cosmetics were stolen from the house in the suburb of Bentley Park while the owners were away over the festive break.

Police say a neighbour keeping an eye on the property noticed the home had been broken into on New Year's Day and the owners reported the theft to police when they returned later that day.

Earlier this week the owners found a bag on their front doorstep containing several items that had been stolen plus a sum of money, despite no cash being taken during the theft.

They assume the money is to pay for the damage to cause to the house during the break-in.

Police investigations are continuing.
