Return to polls looming for Ferny Grove

Eight days after Queenslanders went to the polls, it's looking increasingly likely those residing in the Ferny Grove electorate will have to do it all again.

The northwest Brisbane seat has complicated the state's already ambiguous election outcome after Palmer United Party candidate Mark Taverner was disqualified for being an undischarged bankrupt.

The revelation forced the Electoral Commission of Queensland to confirm it would refer the electorate's results to the Court of Disputed Returns after returning the writ for the statewide figures.

The court will then decide if the Ferny Grove results' are valid and, if they are found not to be, determine the consequences.

One such consequence is a by-election, which has been looming as a prospect since news of Mr Taverner's ineligibility broke.

The issue with Ferny Grove means no party can legitimately form government until the situation is resolved, newly elected Liberal National Party leader Lawrence Springborg said.

He also deflected speculation of a Labor minority government being clinched by a victory in the seat of Maryborough.

"Regardless of what the outcome in Maryborough may (be) ... It is going to hinge more on what happens in Ferny Grove than it will hinge on any other seat," Mr Springborg said.

"(And) there may not be a decision for some time yet."

His comments echo those of LNP president Bruce McIver, who previously said a by-election in Ferny Grove would be the fairest outcome.

But some analysts have predicted, given legal processes, it could be mid-April before Ferny Grove residents cast their ballots again.

Meanwhile, ALP leader Annastacia Palaszczuk said she "didn't want to deal with hypotheticals" when asked about the potentially pivotal seat.

"We need to have certainty and we need to have stability," she said.

"But no one voted for Lawrence Springborg."
