More severe weather batters southeast Qld

Thousands are without power as severe weather, including large hailstones, continue to batter Queensland's southeast.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that severe thunderstorms have been detected at Logan City and the Tingalpa Reservoir on Tuesday evening.

The storms are moving in a northwest direction and are expected to impact Boonah, Cleveland, Wynnum, as well as the area between Boonah and Beaudesert, the Brisbane Airport and Mud Island.

A severe weather warning remains for Redland, Brisbane, parts of Logan, Moreton Island and the Scenic Rim.

"Damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones are likely," the weather bureau warns.

There are reports a dangerous hailstorm has battered parts of the Gold Coast causing traffic chaos, and a large tree has reportedly gone through a roof at Tugun on the Gold Coast.

Tweed Heads residents reported golf ball-sized hail on Tuesday afternoon.

Energex says more than 5000 homes are without power, mainly in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast.

Tree damage has been reported in the Tallebudgera and Currumbin Valley and 44mm of rain fell in just half an hour at Currumbin Creek and Rathdowney.

Four other storm cells have hit other parts of the southeast, including Ipswich, Rathdowney, the Lockyer Valley, the Sunshine Coast and Gympie.

Queensland authorities have warned residents in affected areas to bring loose outdoor items inside and to secure outdoor items that cannot be moved.

They have also urged residents to be patient when calling for help from the State Emergency Service.
