SNAPSHOT OF THE ROBERT SPEEDY TRIAL:

WHO

Robert George Speedy, 49, from Labrador on the Gold Coast.

CHARGES

Attempted murder and three counts of armed robbery.

Speedy shot dog squad officer Gary Hamrey in the face in the backyard of a Gold Coast home.

He opened fire with a rifle in the early hours of September 27, 2013, after police tracked him and an accomplice from the scene of an armed robbery.

ARREST

Speedy was shot in the leg during the shootout and his accomplice Jake Watson was shot in the foot.

Officers arrested them at the scene.

TRIAL

The prosecution said Speedy had been determined to escape with $40,000 stolen from a nearby tavern, and had aimed to kill Sgt Hamrey.

The defence said Speedy was affected by drugs and may have panicked and fired at Sgt Hamrey's lit torch in a bid to escape under cover of darkness.

VERDICT

The jury took less than six hours to find Speedy guilty.

SENTENCE

He will be sentenced alongside Watson at a later date.
