Sleeping bag death accidental: Qld Coroner

An intellectually disabled man found inside a sleeping bag wearing several layers of ski clothing accidentally killed himself while conducting "some sort of experiment", a coroner has ruled.

The body of Sunshine Coast man Karl Robert Wright, 43, was found in a locked shed by his mother at the family home at Dulong on July 29 last year.

He was found inside a closed sleeping bag atop a mattress and was wearing two ski vests, a rain jacket, a hooded jacket, a sloppy joe and a t-shirt.

Mr Wright was also wearing long black ski pants, green track pants, underpants, two pairs of thick socks, a balaclava and had a gag made of cling wrap in his mouth.

He also had zip ties around both hands, which were linked together by a third tie.

His mother Paula Wright disputed a police ruling that her son had committed suicide, telling an inquest into his death her son was a happy and well-liked man.

Deputy State Coroner John Lock published his inquest findings this week, ruling out suicide or third-party involvement.

Mr Lock said Mr Wright, who had a moderate intellectual disability, had a "very unusual fascination" with snow and ski clothing.

"The evidence supports a conclusion that the most likely scenario was that this was some sort of experiment," Mr Lock said.

"It involved clothing that he was fascinated with and occurred in the shed that he spent so much time in.

"The planning was quite elaborate."

Mr Lock said it was also not the first time Mr Wright had experimented with cling wrap.

He said there was no evidence to suggest the experiment was for sexual gratification.
