Seven charged over Queensland scams

Seven people have been charged after a long-running investigation into money laundering and investment scams on the Gold Coast.

The five men and two women were taken to the Brisbane watch house and are set to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday afternoon.

They have all been charged with aggravated fraud over so-called boiler room syndicates, where victims are cold-called and pressured into handing over cash for fraudulent investment schemes.

Five are also facing money laundering charges.

Four of those arrested have previously been charged with fraud or money laundering offences, stemming from an earlier stage of the same investigation.

Crime and Corruption Commission crime director Kathleen Florian says some were allegedly directors or senior employees of a private investigation firm.

They are accused of committing frauds using numerous companies and schemes.

The partner of former detective Mick Featherstone, Zoei Charissa Keong, and associate Travis Charles Burch were charged with fraud and laundering offences as part of the same operation last year.

It's alleged the pair were employed by Mr Featherstone's Phoenix Global private investigation firm when they were allegedly involved in a scam that led to investors in a company named Tropical Point collectively losing more than $700,000.

State Crime Command's Taskforce Maxima Commander Michael Niland said victims had suffered substantial financial loss.

"These crimes have had enormous impact on many of the victims," he said.

"We will continue to target the facilitators of organised crime who enable these crimes to flourish."

Police and the Crime and Corruption Commission launched Operation Lima Violin II in July 2014.

The operation has involved a team of detectives, financial investigators, intelligence officers and forensic computing specialists.
