Malcolm Turnbull must stump up the cash in this year's federal budget to help build Brisbane's Cross River Rail link or face a major delay, the premier says.

Annastacia Palaszczuk says the Queensland government has put $850 million on the table and it's time the prime minister finally allocates critical federal funds to build the 10km line.

"The federal budget is coming up in the near future. What Queensland wants to see, what I want to see, is some money for Cross River Rail in that budget," the premier told reporters in Rockhampton on Monday.

Mr Turnbull last year announced $10 million to help plan the project, but he has not said how much the federal government might put up to pay for the line linking Bowen Hills with Woolloongabba.

He's also said the Cross River Rail plan must incorporate the Brisbane City Council's Brisbane Metro project, which has been opposed by the state government.

The Labor government says the 2023 completion date won't be met without a federal injection soon.

"It's around a $5 billion project so we have to do it with the federal government," the premier said.

"I wouldn't say it's dead in the water (without immediate funding) but it would take a long time to do."
