Shane Heal 'probed over betting claims'

Police are reportedly investigating claims basketball great Shane Heal is linked to bets placed on the Southeast Queensland Stars women's basketball team while he was their coach.

Queensland Police said they were probing allegations "relating to inappropriate betting" and were liaising with other agencies.

However, they wouldn't provide any other details, including who they were investigating or the circumstances surrounding the claims.

Media are reporting a person at a firm linked to Heal placed a bet, worth $500 or $600, for the Stars to win a game played late last year.

In a statement to News Corp, Mr Heal said: "I have never bet against my team".

The Stars were placed into liquidation last month.

Comment has been sought from the Brisbane lawyers reportedly acting for Heal as well as the Women's Basketball League and Basketball Australia.
