Bail denied over Qld teacher's death

A man who allegedly held a Brisbane school teacher captive before he was hit and killed by a truck on a highway in northern NSW will remain behind bars.

Mark Francis Frost, 46, appeared by video link as a charge of taking or detaining Brisbane-based teacher Anthony Stott, 43, with intent to obtain advantage was mentioned in Tweed Heads Local Court on Wednesday.

He applied for bail, but was unsuccessful.

His partner, Lauren Clair Grainger, 39, was refused bail on the same charge on Monday over concerns she could interfere with witnesses or destroy key evidence.

Magistrate Geoff Dunlevy said the case was unusual and an "air of mystery" surrounded Mr Stott's death.

"The offences are serious in nature and the prosecution case is relatively strong," he said.

Despite Frost's strong ties to the community, the magistrate denied bail, ruling there was a chance the defendant could interfere with witnesses and the police investigation.

The schoolteacher had just returned to Australia from Peru before he died.

Mr Stott's BMW was located in the middle of the M1 at 2am, a short distance from the property where he was allegedly tied up, police say.

He was struck by the truck while walking along the highway about 7am.

Detectives will allege Mr Stott was tied to the chair by Frost and Grainger at their home between 2am and 7am.

It's not known how Mr Stott got to and from the property. It's also unclear if he was released or broke free from the chair.

Mr Stott's relationship with the accused remains unclear.

Frost and Grainger will return to the same court on April 6 for a committal mention.
