A body believed to be a 65-year-old man has been found after a boat capsized off the Queensland coast.

The yacht was about four nautical miles south of Lady Elliot Island, near Gladstone, when it sent out a distress signal at 5am today.

Police believe the boat was sailing from Yeppoon to Brisbane, with three passengers on board, when it upturned.

Emergency services started a search and rescue operation involving multiple vessels, police divers and a rescue helicopter.

A father and son aged 62 and 27 both from Yeppoon remain in stable conditions at Bundaberg Hospital after being winched to safety at 10.15am.

Just after 2pm, water police found what's believed to be the body of the 65-year-old, who is from Yeppoon.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner and Marine Safety Queensland has been advised.
