'Reinstate Qld parks': conservationists

Conservationists want the Queensland government to ban logging in several forest reserves near Cairns to help save a threatened glider species.

The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) has taken aim at the former Newman government for leaving behind a "destructive legacy" by allowing logging in habitats of the yellow-bellied glider.

The Liberal National Party sought to take over Commonwealth environmental assessment and approval powers while undermining its protection, according to ACF spokesman Andrew Picone.

But the north Queensland subspecies of the glider wasn't the only one left vulnerable when protections were stripped away, he said.

"The cassowary, Eungella honeyeater, spot-tailed quoll and glossy black-cockatoo are just some of the species at risk," he said.

"In many instances it has been left up to community groups to collect the baseline data and monitor threatened species populations."

ACF has called on the Palaszczuk government to reinstate the Tumoulin and Mount Baldy reserves and restart the process of turning them back into national parks.
