Red-bellied black snake removed from Queensland sandpit

A highly-venomous red-bellied black snake has been removed from a child's sandpit in Queensland' southeast.

Snake catcher Christian Textillis Andersen filmed the risky removal, which happened in a backyard in Nanango last Wednesday, in the South Burnett region northwest of Brisbane.

The video shows Mr Andersen carefully removing several items from the sandpit, including a bucket, rattle, and what looks like an old cake tin.

Finally, Mr Andersen uncovers the snake.

"Only a little one, eh?" he says.

"Does that mean there's a bigger one around somewhere?" one of the women watching on asks.

"Not necessarily," Mr Andersen replies.

"Red-bellies, they give birth to live young."

He then gently hooks the snake, which seems to be sleeping.

When it doesn't react, Mr Andersen dispenses with the hook and picks up the snake with his right hand.

"Come here," he says to the reptile, which doesn't put up much of a fight as he slips it into a bag.

"That was big!" says one of the women.

"Oh, it was decent size," he says.

"They do get bigger."
