Thunderstorm threat looms in parts of Queensland, heat lingers elsewhere

The threat of flooding looms in Queensland today as showers and storms continue in the state.

Severe thunderstorms are possible in areas from Townsville to Brisbane, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

"The primary threat with those storms is areas of heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding or riverine flooding," senior meteorologist Angus Hines said.

Areas of particular concern for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall include the northern Cape York Peninsula, the eastern districts south of Ingham and adjacent land areas.

Brisbane was tipped to reach a top of 30C today, while Surfers Paradise was expected to hit 29C.

Temperatures in other parts of the state were predicted to climb higher including Cairns at 34C, Townsville at 32C, Rockhampton at 32C and Mackay at 31C.

Meanwhile in the far west of Queensland, hot temperatures in the 40s are expected to continue today.

Sunny conditions are expected in the state's south-east later in the week.
