Qld wants same federal funding as WA

Queensland wants unconditional federal infrastructure funding like Western Australia, the state's treasurer says.

It comes after the federal government said it would transfer $499 million to WA for roads and infrastructure.

This funding is on top of the state's GST returns and isn't tied to the Commonwealth's asset-recycling program.

On Friday, Queensland Treasurer Curtis Pitt said he wanted the same deal for his state.

"They need to understand that we deserve our fair share of funding," Mr Pitt said.

"We've seen some funding provided to Western Australia outside of the GST pool, which of course has been made available to them for infrastructure."

"We'd like to see that sort of a figure in the billions of dollars available to us."

The treasurer said Queenslanders should not be penalised for their bipartisan opposition to asset sales.

Mr Pitt promised to continue fighting for federal funding but said the state would also consider public-private partnerships and further bond issues to fund priority infrastructure.

Shadow treasurer John-Paul Langbroek indicated a WA-style deal would be good if the Labor party was able to negotiate it.

But he said the government should be realistic about funding priority infrastructure.

"It's up to Labor, who went into the election with their eyes open, to make sure they put that infrastructure on the table because it's what Queenslanders want, need and deserve," he said.
