Queensland's bushfire emergency

QUEENSLAND IS ON FIRE. HERE'S HOW THE EMERGENCY IS UNFOLDING.

* 69 active fires were burning across the state at 4.30pm.

* One of the worst blazes is at Applethorpe where residents were evacuated again after being allowed to briefly return home on Saturday morning.

* Nearby Stanthorpe may also be evacuated again if winds intensify.

* Fires in the Gold Coast hinterland are still raging, with residents of Binna Burra and Beechmont being told to prepare to leave.

* 15 homes have been destroyed, with four other structures also lost.

* Conditions are volatile and not expected to ease until Tuesday.

* A refuge centre has been established in Canungra.

* Fire crews from NSW and federal defence personnel are assisting.

* The Queensland government has promised assistance to those left homeless.
