Register of banned drinkers proposed to reduce alcohol-fuelled violence in Queensland

A registry of banned drinkers is being suggested by three Queensland Mayors, who say their towns are being plagued by alcohol-fuelled violence.

Jenny Hill, Bob Manning and Danielle Slade, who are mayors of Townsville, Cairns and Mount Isa respectively, say that Northern Territory residents are crossing the border into their Queensland towns to drink and start fights away from the territory's alcohol bans.

The suggested banned drinkers register would see the recently reintroduced alcohol restrictions extended across the border to Queensland, for Northern Territory residents only.

"We can't go on not addressing these problems," Manning said.

"We're going to continue to raise it with the State Government, we're going to continue to go to Mayors in other big centres saying 'you too can come out.'

"We need to push for this to happen."

The proposal comes after the mayors claim alcohol-fuelled violence has gotten out of control in the three towns.

However, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the proposed register would be "very difficult to administer".

"The Deputy Premier's happy to hear their proposals about how they would implement and how it would work, and how they would fund it," she said.
