Queensland lockout laws head to parliament

Queensland's controversial proposed lockout laws will be debated in parliament on Thursday.

The government this week announced it had abandoned its election promise of 1am lockouts and 3am last drinks policy in favour of a new 2am last drinks policy.

Under the new plan, some establishments in entertainment precincts will be able to apply for a 3am last drinks call if they have a 1am lockout.

Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath told parliament earlier this week the changes were "an improvement on our election commitment based on consultation and research".

But the nightclub industry argues the confusing new plan will cost jobs.

The state opposition has accused the government of rushing changes to election commitment to succumb to the whims of crossbench MPs, including Billy Gordon.

The taxi industry has warned the laws will endanger drivers because punters would be more inclined to drink away from entertainment precincts, which have secure ranks.

"(It will be) forcing taxi drivers to put themselves in greater danger due to the unregulated and unknown environments of the pick-up destinations they will be called to," Taxi Council Queensland vice-president Gordana Blazevic said.
