The humpback whale was spotted in Susan River, which feeds into Hervey Bay. Department of Environment and Science
The Department of Environment and Science said rangers searched again for the whale on Wednesday but were unable to find it.
They are hopeful it has found its way out of the river, which feeds into Hervey Bay, which is renowned as one of the world's best whale-watching destinations and a declared Whale Heritage Site.
The department urged boaties in and around the area to keep a lookout for whales during whale season.
Whale sightings in rivers are rare but not unprecedented.
