Queensland expecting strong winds and heavy rainfall

Queensland has been issued a strong wind warning as a low-pressure system moves through the Coral Sea.

Northern parts of the state including the South East Gulf of Carpentaria, Mackay Coast, Capricornia Coast, Hervey Bay and K'gari Coast are expecting strong winds ahead of a forecasted downfall further south.

The low-pressure system is moving through the Coral Sea, bringing persistent easterly winds and heavy rainfall into the region.

By tomorrow, the state's south-east will be hit by widespread rainfall of about 40mm to 50mm, with some heavier isolated falls forecasted between Rockhampton and Bundaberg, which could see up to 80mm of rain.

It could cause flash flooding in those areas.

A strong wind warning has also been issued for Sunday in the South East Gulf of Carpentaria, North East Gulf of Carpentaria, Townsville Coast, Mackay Coast, Capricornia Coast, Hervey Bay, K'gari Coast, Sunshine Coast Waters, Moreton Bay and Gold Coast Waters areas.

Minor flood warnings were issued for the Weir River, Moonie River, Lower Warrego River, Barco River and Cooper Creek on Friday.

The Georgina River and Eyre Creek were also issued with moderate flood warnings on Friday.

The rain is expected to hit northern New South Wales by tomorrow morning.

It comes as the Bureau of Meteorology announced the El Nino weather pattern is over.
