TOWNSVILLE STADIUM

The North Queensland Cowboys are fighting hard, sending star Jonathon Thurston out to warn the club's future is at risk without a new $250 million stadium. Bill Shorten has already commited to help fund the project along with the state government, but Malcolm Turnbull is yet to match that pledge.

BOAT TURNBACKS

Shorten's visit to the Townsville seat of Herbert was overshadowed by the emergence of a photograph of the local candidate, Cathy O'Toole, attending an asylum seeker protest, despite Labor officially supporting boat turnbacks.

REFUGEE SETTLEMENTS

Dawson MP George Christensen made national headlines when he declared on Facebook that he'd recieved an assurance that Syrian refuggees would not be settled in his electorate, arguing the region's economy couldn't handle the "influx". Turnbull put himself in the spotlight by saying Christensen had a point.
