Queensland education department employees stood down over child abuse reporting failure

The Queensland Department of Education has stood down two employees after they failed to pass on details of hundreds of child abuse cases to authorities.

Education Minister Kate Jones said the department has received a total of 3800 reports of child sex abuse in Queensland schools so far this year, but had failed to act on 644 cases.

Ms Jones blamed the failure on a computer glitch caused by IT changes made by the previous Liberal National Party government.

Ms Jones said there was no guarantee the 644 suspected victims of abuse were not still being abused.
