Qlders want larger cabinet: Trad

Queensland's deputy premier has defended the government's backflip on a promise to limit the number of cabinet ministers, saying her party has listened to feedback.

Jackie Trad confirmed on Sunday that Queensland is in line for at least one extra minister, who will handle an innovation portfolio.

And Ms Trad did not rule out the possibility of a domestic violence minister, amid speculation that three extra cabinet roles will be created in an upcoming reshuffle.

This is despite Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk promising a reduced, 14-member cabinet going into the last election.

But Ms Trad said the business sector and community organisations had made it clear they think there should be a more even spread of work.

"We promised to be consultative, we promised to listen to Queenslanders, and quite clearly, people are saying that we need to think about spreading the load a bit more," she told reporters in Brisbane on Sunday.

"I know that the premier committed to having only 14 ministers, but at the end of the day we also need to deliver to Queenslanders right across the broad breadth and length of this state."

Exactly who will become innovation minister remains unclear.

So does the identity of the state's new police minister, after Bundamba MP Jo-Ann Miller was sacked from the role last week following a series of blunders.

Premier Palaszczuk is sitting down with all ministers to review their performances.

Ms Trad said the decision to boost cabinet was an acknowledgment that the government had more work to do at a time of economic transition.

"We are future-focused and that means we need more people to lift the burden and share the load," she said.

Opposition spokesman Tim Nicholls said the Palaszczuk government was looking after its own at the expense of the economy.

"All they are really concerned about are their own jobs," he told reporters on Sunday.

"What we've seen is .. .the breaking of an election promise and the kowtowing to the union bosses and factions in the Labor party."

Mr Nicholls said Labor had started out with a bad policy.

"But that was Annastacia Palaszczuk's policy. She took it to the people ... and now it's a policy that she's going to break," he said.
