Don't eat spoiled food, don't wade through flood waters and watch out for creepy crawlies seeking dry ground.

These are the basic health precautions being urged upon Queenslanders cleaning up in cyclone and flood ravaged areas.

The state's Chief Health Officer, Dr Jeannette Young, said food safety was an important priority for the 63,000 people who lost power when Cyclone Debbie tore through the area around Bowen on Tuesday.

"When it comes to food safety, always remember that if in doubt, throw it out," she said.

"After four hours without power, food in the refrigerator should be thrown out and after 24 hours food in the freezer needs to be cooked, consumed or thrown out."

Dr Young said people should also avoid wading through or swimming in floodwaters as they can carry serious diseases.

Heavy rains can also cause snakes and spiders to seek dry shelter in houses, she said.

Additional tips to stay healthy and safe are:

* Don't handle wet electrical equipment or touch fallen power lines

* Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun even in cloudy conditions

* Wash your hands thoroughly before eating or smoking

* Treat any cuts with antiseptic and cover with a dressing. Seek medical help if the cut becomes red or sore
