Qlders pick wallets over pets in fire

More Queenslanders would save their wallets and mobile phones from a burning home before their pets.

An RACQ survey of more than 1000 people found 36.4 per cent ranked their wallets or handbags as their most prized possession.

Second on the list were mobile phones, with 30 per cent of people indicating they would save the device if they could grab just one thing from a house engulfed in flames.

Only 27.8 per cent of Queenslanders would rescue their pets first.

Drivers licences and passports rounded out the top five items which would be saved, with cash, photos, laptops, computer hard-drives and jewellery making up the top 10.

RACQ's Mike Sopinski used the results of the survey to remind Queenslanders winter was a high-risk time for house fires.

"Now is the time to do a quick home fire safety audit by checking you have working smoke alarms and at least the basics to fight a fire in the house, an extinguisher and a fire blanket," he said.
