Tree crushes bushwalker in Qld tragedy

A bushwalk has turned into tragedy after a woman was killed by a falling tree in the Gold Coast hinterland.

The 35-year-old woman was walking on the popular Caves Circuit in Binna Burra on Tuesday when a large tree snapped in half and fell on her without warning.

Another person walking with the woman narrowly avoided being hit by the tree and debris.

Paramedics were unable to revive the woman, who sustained serious head injuries.

It's believed the woman was dragged several metres off the track by the wreckage of the tree.

Queensland Ambulance supervisor Darrin Hatchman said the incident had simply been a case of the woman being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"Just a tragic, freak accident resulting in the loss of life," Mr Hatchman said.

"It's a massive tree, it would be probably three-metre wide, has just broken, probably 20 metres up and has ... struck upon these bushwalkers with next to no warning unfortunately."

The Binna Burra Lodge refused to comment on reports the victim was a guest, where it's been reported she was staying with her husband.

Police are expected to prepare a report for the coroner while Queensland's Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing have closed the track, located in the Lamington National Park, until further notice.
