A man playing Pokemon Go has saved a Queensland woman who was being viciously assaulted in a failed carjacking.

Police say the 48-year-old was sitting in her car on a Rockhampton street when another woman opened a door and dragged her from the vehicle.

She was assaulted with an unknown object, possibly a tool, after the carjacker was unable to start the car.

The woman, who has multiple stitches on her face and staples in her head, says it's fortunate she was at a 'Pokestop' when she was attacked.

"The person wasn't too happy my car wouldn't start after she let me and my keys go," the woman posted on Facebook.

"Oh what a feeling ... Toyota.

"Thankfully I am on a Pokestop and a man coming to catch Pokemon saved me and called police etc."

The woman was taken to Rockhampton Base Hospital for treatment.

Police are searching for the carjacker who is described as Caucasian, in her late 20s, about 160cm tall, of medium build with shoulder length wavy hair and green eyes.
