Qld woman, 107, credits age to giving

Marjorie Bostock has no problem making sure her son toes the line.

But unlike most mothers, the Ipswich woman is 107, while her son Ronnie is 85.

"He has to do what he's told to do," Ms Bostock said of her octogenarian offspring.

It was one of many quips the lively great-great-grandmother had when Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale arrived at her home on Saturday to celebrate the milestone.

"I can still feed him with a bottle of milk," she said once she learned Mr Pisasale was a paltry 64 years old.

Ms Bostock had no problem reading without glasses, bouncing a ball, racing around her home with her walker or blowing out three candles that displayed her age, declaring proudly: "One blow puts the bloody lot out."

She put the secret to her long and healthy life down to her giving attitude.

"It's to please other people instead of thinking of just my own self," Ms Bostock said.

"I spend my time trying to understand what different people like."

Ms Bostock's age makes her Ipswich's oldest woman and she insisted she was going for the state record as well.

"I won't try to count when I'm going to bloody well die. I'm going to sit here as long as I can," she said.

"If I can be the oldest living person that's lived in Queensland, I'll be as happy as a mudlark."

Mr Pisasale said Ms Bostock's positive attitude was an inspiration to himself and the community.

"Some of the things she says, that it's about caring for others, it's about hard work and common sense ... it's something that we should all model ourselves on," he said.

Ms Bostock's birthday celebrations will continue on Sunday when she'll be visited by four younger generations of her family, which includes five children, 14 grandchildren and dozens more great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Queensland's oldest person, Evelyn Vigor, celebrated her 110th birthday in January, while Australia's oldest person ever, Christina Cock, died in 2002 aged 114.
