A 50-year-old traffic controller has died after being hit by a car at a work site southwest of Brisbane.

The man was conducting traffic at the site on Barry Drive at Redbank Plains, about 9.45am on Tuesday, when he was hit by a car driven by a woman in her 60s, police said.

His workmates attempted to treat his severe injuries but the man died at the scene, Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Medical Director Dr Stephen Rashford said.

"QAS sent a number of officers, a number of critical care paramedics, advanced care paramedics and a trauma response team from Brisbane," he said.

"It's particularly traumatic for everyone involved and it's absolutely devastating for his work companions."

The woman was not injured.

The Forensic Crash Unit has been called in to investigate.
