Qld town seeks fresh flood inquiry

HOW THE 2011 FLASH FLOOD UNFOLDED IN GRANTHAM:

* Heavy rain hits an already drenched Lockyer Valley in the 24 hours before the afternoon of January 10, 2011, flooding the Lockyer Creek

* Low-lying towns of Murphys Creek and Withcott are flooded, killing people and destroying homes

* Downstream at Helidon, the Lockyer Creek does not break its banks

* The mass of floodwater slows in the 12km stretch between Helidon and Grantham

* A flash flood about 2m tall and 2km wide tears through Grantham, killing 12 people

* Locals believe an embankment at a quarry halfway between the towns acted like a dam, holding a mass of water that built up back to Helidon before bursting

* The Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry, completed in 2012, found the quarry did not contribute to the flash flood

* But a fresh investigation finds the original probe took in modelling based on a smaller breach in the embankment of the quarry than what locals witnessed

* Grantham residents were not called to give evidence about the embankment breach.
