Qld to reverse land clearing laws

Green campaigners have urged Labor to move quickly to reform Queensland's controversial land clearing laws after a report found clearing had doubled in two years.

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad has pledged to overturn relaxed policies brought in by the previous LNP government, which she blamed for the "unsustainable crisis".

Ms Trad made the announcement as the government released a report that found land clearing rates doubled in the first two years of the Campbell Newman-led government, contributing to 35 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Environmental group the Wilderness Society welcomed the move but said Labor has moved too slowly on the issue since taking government.

It urged Ms Trad to move quickly in repealing the laws to curb "panic clearing".

WWF-Australia scientist Dr Martin Taylor said: "The delay is unacceptable - bushland that should be protected continues to be bulldozed each week."
