Qld to get real-time donation disclosures

Queenslanders will be able to see in real-time who is donating to political parties from 2017.

The minority Labor government has already reversed Liberal National Party changes that raised the disclosure threshold for donations from $1000 to $12,400.

Opposition MPs protested the retrospective changes, which passed last May, as unfair and said the move was "rammed through" with a short consultation period.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Tuesday announced she would go a step further, with real-time donation rules coming into play for both state and local governments by the end of 2016.

"An implementation plan is currently being considered, but I envisage the electronic system will be in place by the first of January this year and will go live by the end of February 2017," she told a budget estimates hearing.

"It means that instead of waiting months to see who is donating to a political party, people will be able to see who is donating and how much they are donating before an election takes place."

Ms Palaszczuk said the move was fundamental to accountability and integrity.

"It is something I fully believe in, it is something my government fully believes in," she said.

Cabinet endorsed the change on Monday.

The government will need to work with the Electoral Commission Queensland to introduce the changes.

"I think we'll be one of the first states in the nation to address this," Ms Palaszczuk said.
