Queensland teen charged over school choking game

A Gold Coast teenager has been charged after allegedly choking a classmate, causing him to lose consciousness and suffer a serious head injury.

Jamie Cox, 15, required surgery in Gold Coast University Hospital to remove a blood clot from his brain earlier this month after passing out and hitting his head on the ground at Palm Beach-Currumbin High School.

Police say the teenager had his neck restrained by another student in a choke-hold before he lost consciousness.

That student, aged 16, will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.

Police said they could not release more information about the incident.

Officers were investigating whether Jamie was playing a game called "tap out".

Jamie's father, Rodney Cox, has rejected suggestions his son was willingly playing the game.
