Qld schools to get $26m maintenance boost

The Queensland government says more than $26 million worth of maintenance work will be carried out at schools across the state during the holiday period.

Education Minister Kate Jones says the funding will provide jobs for tradies and help address a $260 million maintenance backlog left by the previous government.

"We want our students to have the best possible learning environments to make the most of their education," Ms Jones said.

Opposition education spokesman Tim Mander said the former Liberal National Party government had invested $300 million during its three-year term to address a maintenance backlog from previous Labor administrations.

It also scrapped Labor's policy of only allowing QBuild to do maintenance work so schools could employ local tradies for competitive prices.

"If it weren't for these changes, Kate Jones would have had to contend with a school maintenance backlog of almost a billion dollars by now," Mr Mander said.
