Police are searching for a machete-wielding man who broke into a home north of Caboolture.

Police were first called to Cardinal Circuit in Caboolture around 10.30 (AEST) on Monday after reports of a man breaking into a property.

The intruder was disturbed by a witness who saw him leaving the premises with a machete which may have been stolen from the home, a police media spokesman said.

But a subsequent cordon and search of the area failed to locate the man.

Police alerted nearby state schools as a courtesy and several, including Tullawong State School and Tullawong High School, were reportedly locked down.

Police patrols of the area were continuing on Monday afternoon.
