Queensland's new chief justice will indicate how she plans to operate in the state's top judicial role.

Justice Catherine Holmes became the first female to be appointed chief justice in Queensland when Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath announced her promotion from the Court of Appeal on Monday.

Justice Holmes wasn't present during the announcement, but Ms Palaszczuk said she would make a public appearance on Tuesday.

Ms D'Ath was asked on Monday about Justice Holmes' main objectives in the role.

"I'll let the new chief justice explain what her role is and what she intends to do in the position," Ms D'Ath said.

"But Justice Holmes comes with a wealth of experience to this position and comes with overwhelming support, based on my consultation with the legal profession and with the judiciary."

Justice Holmes' appointment comes after Tim Carmody's resignation in July.

Following a string of controversies, the former chief justice conceded his position was untenable.
