Trad plays down Qld jobless spike

Acting Premier Jackie Trad has suggested Queenslanders shouldn't put too much stock in the state's increased unemployment rate, which has leapfrogged the national average.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released on Thursday show the state's seasonally adjusted rate jumped from 5.6 per cent in February to 6.1 per cent in March.

In contrast, the national average fell from 5.8 to 5.7 per cent.

Ms Trad instead focused on the state's trend unemployment rate, which has flatlined at 6.0 per cent.

"Clearly, the seasonally adjusted figures are concerning, but I do point to the fact there have been significant fluctuations of the data coming out of the ABS," she said.

"So what we are taking comfort in is the fact that trend unemployment has remained steady."

Queensland's seasonally adjusted rate dropped 0.8 percentage points in February before rising 0.5 percentage points in March.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland spokesman Nick Behrens said while it was concerning to see 13,000 people had registered as unemployed during March, he wasn't surprised.

"CCIQ takes no pleasure highlighting poor economic performance, but we do believe it is time to take off the rose-tinted glassed," he said.

"Before we can fix the problem we have to recognise that one exists."
