Qld Easter road toll lowest in 20 years

A fatality-free Easter has been the safest on Queensland roads in 20 years.

Following last year's horror Easter road toll of eight, no deaths were recorded from Thursday to Monday.

"Last year we saw the worst Easter on our roads since seasonal records began in 1992. Thankfully this year, it's a different story," assistant police commissioner Mike Keating said.

Police have praised motorists for their diligence, with fewer people caught speeding.

Roughly 17,700 drivers were nabbed going over the limit this year, compared to more than 23,000 in 2015.

However, there was a near four-fold spike in drivers testing positive to drugs.

A total of 205 motorists recorded positive roadside tests - up from 55 last Easter.

Speaking on Monday, Mr Keating said the increase was part of a worrying national trend but also the result of more widespread testing.

"We know it's an increasing rate in terms of (being) a contributing factor to serious injury and fatal traffic crashes," he said.

Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey urged drivers to continue their good habits.

"We can't rest," he said.

"I challenge all Queensland drivers to keep driving like we did over Easter."

The nationwide Easter road toll was eight, the lowest in recent times.
