Queensland's research universities will get a boost with $13.4 million extra government funding announced for 2017.

A total of $326.1 million will go to researchers next year, including more than $174 million to support about 7000 master's and PhD students a year.

"Queensland researchers have no shortage of smart ideas but we need to become better at taking research and applying it in ways that benefit the broader community and result in new job-creating commercial realities," federal Education and Training Minister Simon Birmingham said.

"We've worked closely with our research sector to create a simple, transparent framework that gives universities flexibility in how they support research and research training."
