Qld racing boss met minister only once

Queensland's racing industry was anticipating a shake-up when the state's government changed in January, a sacked chairman says.

The Palaszczuk government on Tuesday abolished Queensland's racing boards after a Commission of Inquiry report found the industry could not manage the risk of cruelty against dogs and turned a blind eye to live baiting.

Industry figures had struggled to secure meetings with Racing Minister Bill Byrne in the wake of the live baiting scandal, former Racing Queensland chairman Kevin Dixon said on Thursday.

Mr Byrne met with Mr Dixon only once - the day after the scandal broke - to inform him action was to follow.

"Not only is that myself, but all other members of the board, the department itself, and even our partners ... have been unable to secure a meeting with him," Mr Dixon told ABC Radio.

Industry bodies were bracing for a shake-up upon the change of government in Queensland, he said.

"Unfortunately, the politics in racing is such that it seems you have a change of government and you have to change the racing boards," he said.

"There are a lot of seriously important and influential people circulating in the racing circles and this is just one of those industries it seems has to follow that."

Even though it was only a matter of time before the boards changed, members did no`t want to "cut and run", Mr Dixon said.

"We wanted to do the best job," he said.

"We were there because of our passion for the industries."

He said the current board cut costs by about 30 per cent upon its establishment.

The average member was paid $14,000 per year, down from $80,000, for a "tremendous amount of effort", Mr Dixon said.

"They're doing it not for financial gain, they're doing it for their passion for their industry."
